The **PolarPro 82-2/5 VND-MST Peter McKinnon Mist VND Filter** is a meticulously engineered, high-performance variable neutral density (VND) filter designed to elevate your photography by seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology with the creative vision of renowned photographer Peter McKinnon. Crafted from premium, multi-coated optical glass, this 82mm filter delivers exceptional clarity, minimizing lens flare and ghosting while maintaining vibrant, true-to-life colors across every shot. The innovative **MST (Multi-Stop Technology)** ensures smooth, incremental adjustments between two and five stops of neutral density, allowing photographers to fine-tune exposure without sacrificing sharpness or color fidelity. Whether you're capturing fast-moving subjects like waterfalls, long-exposure cityscapes, or cinematic portraits under challenging lighting conditions, this filter provides the precision needed to achieve professional-grade results with ease.
The **VND-MST** stands out with its **dual-layer design**, combining a high-quality polarizer with a variable ND, which not only enhances contrast and reduces reflections but also eliminates the need for multiple filters. This compact, lightweight construction makes it ideal for travel and on-location shoots, while the **durable aluminum frame** ensures durability against the rigors of professional use. The filter s **smooth, frictionless rotation mechanism** allows for effortless adjustments, even in low-light conditions, making it a versatile tool for both still photography and video applications. Whether you're shooting in broad daylight or under overcast skies, the **Peter McKinnon Mist VND** delivers consistent, cinematic results with minimal effort, empowering photographers to focus on composition and creativity rather than technical limitations.
Perfect for landscape, architectural, and portrait photographers, this filter excels in scenarios where precise exposure control is critical. The **82mm size** accommodates a wide range of lenses, from mid-range to telephoto, ensuring compatibility with most professional and high-end DSLR and mirrorless systems. Its **low-profile design** minimizes bulk, making it an excellent choice for photographers who prioritize portability without compromising performance. ### **Pros and Cons of the PolarPro 82-2/5-VND-MST Peter McKinnon Mist VND Filter (82mm, 5-Stop)**
#### **Pros:**1. **High-Quality Optical Performance** PolarPro is known for producing high-grade optical glass, ensuring minimal color fringing and sharp, clear images. The 5-stop neutral density (ND) effect allows for slower shutter speeds in bright conditions, enabling smooth motion blur in water, light trails, or long exposures.
2. **Versatile ND Strength (5-Stop)** A 5-stop ND is ideal for a wide range of shooting scenarios, from slow water movement in landscapes to cinematic light trails in urban photography. It strikes a balance between usability in bright daylight and versatility in different lighting conditions.
3. **Multi-Coated Optics** The multi-coating on the glass reduces reflections and ghosting, improving contrast and image clarity, especially in backlit or high-contrast scenes.
4. **Durable and Weather-Sealed Construction** The filter is built to withstand outdoor conditions, including moisture and dust, making it reliable for field use.
5. **Peter McKinnon s Recommended Brand** Since Peter McKinnon endorses PolarPro, it carries credibility among photographers who trust his expertise in gear recommendations.
6. **Threaded for 82mm Lens Compatibility** The 82mm size is a popular standard, making it compatible with many mid-to-large-format lenses, including those from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and others.
7. **Screw-In Design (VND-MST)** The screw-in format is convenient for quick attachment and removal, though it may require lens hood adjustments if the filter protrudes too far.
8. **Good Value for a High-Quality ND** Compared to some premium brands, PolarPro offers strong performance at a relatively accessible price point.

#### **Cons:**1. **Potential Vignetting** Some users report slight vignetting (darkening at the edges) when using ND filters, though this can sometimes be corrected in post-processing.
2. **Bulky Profile** The 5-stop ND is thicker than a 2-stop or 3-stop filter, which may cause issues with lens hoods or macro photography where close focusing is required.
3. **Limited Polarization Functionality** While this is a variable ND (VND), it does not include a built-in polarizer. If you need polarization (e.g., reducing glare on water), you would need to stack it with a separate polarizing filter, which can introduce additional reflections or vignetting.
4. **Not as Compact as Alternative Formats** Some photographers prefer square or rectangular ND filters (e.g., Lee or Formatt-Hite) for easier stacking or framing, but screw-in filters are more portable for quick setups.
5. **Potential for Lens Flare** Like all ND filters, this one can introduce lens flare if not used carefully, especially in direct sunlight.
6. **Durability Concerns with Frequent Use** While PolarPro is well-made, frequent attachment/removal or rough handling could eventually damage the filter s threads or coating over time.

### **Conclusion and Recommendation**
The **PolarPro 82-2/5-VND-MST Peter McKinnon Mist VND Filter** is an excellent choice for photographers who prioritize **versatility, optical quality, and durability** in a neutral density filter. Its **5-stop strength** makes it suitable for a broad range of creative applications, from slow water effects to cinematic light painting. The **multi-coated optics** and **weather-sealed build** ensure reliable performance in various conditions, while the **screw-in design** offers convenience for quick use.
However, if you require **polarization** or plan to shoot with **macro lenses frequently**, you may need to consider additional filters or alternative formats. Additionally, the **bulkiness** of a 5-stop ND could be a drawback for photographers who prefer minimal lens protrusion.
**Final Recommendation:**If you re looking for a **high-quality, all-purpose 5-stop ND filter** that balances performance and affordability, the **PolarPro 82-2/5-VND-MST** is a strong choice, especially for photographers who follow Peter McKinnon s workflow. It s well-suited for **landscape, travel, and creative long-exposure photography** where a strong ND is beneficial. Pair it with a **polarizing filter** if needed, and ensure your lens hood can accommodate the filter s size. For those who prioritize **compactness or polarization**, exploring alternative brands (e.g., Lee, Formatt-Hite) or formats (e.g., square filters) may be worth considering.
PolarPro Peter McKinnon Mist Edition II Variable ND Filter 82mm, 2 to 5-Stop Screw-On version. I have 3 of these that I've used over the past few years doing mostly wedding ideograph. They are the best ND filters I've ever used. I will likely be able to ship them out the same day or after purchase depending on time of.
Most ND filters have some sort of noticeable color cast but I feel like any these may give off is virtually unnoticeable. I decided to grab a set of the non-mist variety and I've no longer need these. The glass has no visible damage and all 3 are in perfect working condition. They are 82mm filters but they can be adjusted to fit any lens smaller than with step-down rings.
They don't show an X pattern when you're in between stops.
